Dear Reader

We are proud to present a new publication today: The first issue of CHALLENGE.
Focussing as it does on the subject of medical CBRN defence, CHALLENGE represents a specialised supplement to MEDICAL CORPS INTERNATIONAL FORUM – MCIF. MCIF has for many years provided a forum for medical officers throughout the world, a platform through which they can exchange information and which helps link together the military medical services of the various nations.

In our world in which conflicts and terror attacks are possible almost anywhere and at any time and there is the growing risk of the misuse of scientific innovation and cutting-edge technologies, medical CBRN defence plays a crucial role.

MCIF covers too wide a range of topics to be able to deal with this military medical subject in the necessary depth in the space available. We thus took the decision to launch CHALLENGE, an entirely new publication specifically devoted to this area. It is intended for everyone, military and civilian, who is interested or professionally involved in concerns relating to CBRN defence.

We are proud that this, our first issue, has become a reality. With Colonel (ret) Dr. Ernst-Jürgen Finke, the former head of the Institute of Microbiology of the Bundeswehr as our Editor-in-Chief, we have the services of an individual who has for many years been working on the problems of protecting military personnel and civilian populations against the effects of biological threats. He brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise that will ensure that you can expect informative and fascinating contributions. We will also be using the magazine to inform you about the latest product developments in this sector.

From 2012, CHALLENGE with its specialised contributions and information, will be appearing four times every year. Our objective with this new publication is to contribute towards the international exchange of information and collaboration and to make know-how in the field of medical CBRN defence available to all.

We would also welcome your feedback. Should you have any questions, suggestions, praise or criticism, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!
